Mary Koss’ much-discussed 1987 study of rape prevalence is famous mostly for its fidning that 1 in 8 college women have been victims of rape at some point in their lives. What’s not as well known is that the same study also surveyed thousands of college men, asking them about if they had ever forced a woman to have sex against her will. About 4.5% reported that they had.
It seems to me that we can draw two conclusions from this number (assuming it’s somewhat accurate – see the next post for more discussion of that). First – as even anti-feminists will agree – we can say that the overwhelming majority of men are not rapists. That’s good. Nonetheless, it’s also true that a terrifyingly high number of men have committed rape.
4.5% of the men in the United States is an incredibly high number – that translates into over six million men….
If you added up every US citizen who is Jewish, that would still be less than the total number of rapists…
There are twice as many rapists in the USA as there are single mothers."
But, y’know… not ALL men are rapists. Only 1 in 25 of them. So don’t blame men! It’s not their fault! -__-

- 0.35% of rapes result in incarceration.
- 20% of murders result in incarceration.
- In any given year, there are 5:1 rapes to every murder committed.

"There are only two types of men who are upset that they need permission before they can have sex: rapists and potential rapists."

Clothesline Project - undergrad edition went well. We got about 20 t-shirts total. Mine said:
"To the Steubenville survivor: THANK YOU for having the courage to speak out"
And “speak out” was written in a little megaphone. That was me trying to be clever…

*tw* sexual violence
POOR Trent & Ma’lik. It must have come as such a SHOCK to them that performing a sexual act on a girl who was UNCONSCIOUS and then sending naked pics of her to the rest of the football team was wrong. And now they have to spend ONE WHOLE year in juvy. THOSE POOR BABIES.
To the survivor who has had to suffer through this hell: I am so sorry. This was not your fault. It doesn’t matter if you were drinking. It doesn’t matter how many ‘heartfelt apologies’ these rapists and their families give you. You were assaulted, and it is not your fault. These boys got what they deserved… if anything, they got off with a slap on the wrist. Thank you for being brave enough to report this and go through the trial. You not only stood up for yourself, you also stood up for survivors of sexual assault everywhere.
